JOHN DONNELLY MEMORIAL MOTOCROSS 2011 VIDEO

STYLISH GARRETT SEES OF MERTON TO LIFT TROPHY

Wayne Garrett won a tactical battle with Tommy Merton to lift the prestigious John Donnelly memorial trophy motocross organised by the Killinchy club at Downpatrick.

Merton won the first race in which Garrett was the runner-up and when it came to the second leg those positions were reversed.

That meant Garrett and Merton were level on points as they entered the cliff-hanging final race to decide the destination of this famous piece of silverware.

For the record Merton won the opener by three seconds from Garrett with Hamilton on his own in third place.

Gordon Crockard had just moved into third place at half-distance when he bit the dust big-time. He was left badly winded.

Then in the second race it was Merton who controlled the pace from the front.

Garrett did make a few bold bids to draw level but Merton held the winning line to win by two seconds from Garrett with a recuperated Crockard a fighting third.

Starting the deciding final race there was no rematch for Garrett and Merton. Instead it was Hamilton who gave the impression that he might spoil the party.

In one of his best rides this year Hamilton took the win while Garrett was fully aware that if he finished ahead of Merton then the major would be his.

That’s precisely what happened with Garrett taking second followed by Crockard and Merton.

ULSTER CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 1

The opening round of the 2011 Ulster Motocross Championship took place at the Fantastically prepared Downpatrick Motocross Track.

Grade A had all the top contenders there, Wayne Garrett, Tommy Merton, Richard Bird, Jason Garrett and Davy Gorman all hoping to kick start their championship off in the best Possible way.

In the MX1 Grade A category it proved to be Wayne Garrett was going to be the man to beat as he took 3 out of 3 victories to collect maximum Points

In the MX2 Grade A Category it was much the same as the MX1, Wayne Garrett was on song as he comfortably took yet again 3 victories to leave Downpatrick with a perfect score in both classes and show the opposition what had to be done if they wished to take Victory.

In the ever competitive Grade B category it was Luke Stuart who took the overall from Andrew Gill.

Grade C Mx2 proved to be close but in the end it was Jordan Wade who took the overall from Chris Cully who was tied on points with Karl Thompson.

Grade C Mx1 was yet again close racing but it was Chris Lappin who proved that to finish first first you have to finish, as the took the points lead without a win on the day from Marty Portis.
